The story outlines a haunted
mansion in a small town of Brahmdev where an evil spirit manifests itself
through a deck of cards. It is a horror story with a novel concept of cards I must
say. While I read, I could imagine everything so effortlessly that I was completely
engrossed in the story line of the Khel-The
writings. I could relate the scribbled scenes to many themes from various
horror movies, scenes like... woman showing up on the highway , haunted
mansion, child playing with a ghost, evil birth, haunted basement, horrible
dreams, witches, seduction with evil, presence of shadows in the mirrors, etc.
From the movie Gothika, to Conjuring, Mirrors, case 69, It Follows and Grudge, I could Imagine and relate to everything but the concept of
the deck of cards was new and incited my interest.
There were also lose ends in
the story that provoked me to start questioning and musing over the sequence of
events, based on my knowledge on supernatural stuff. If the body and the source
is destroyed, how can something still manifest itself?? That raises the possibility
that something is yet to be revealed, maybe what needs to be really destroyed
is still intact in its form and position. If the cards were the restraint then
how can they be the medium? Even if so, how can the medium or restraint free an
evil spirit?? And even if so, then it cannot be a simple ghost. Why does it
feel that the nun was telling a lie? Why an evil spirit harmed even the people
who stayed away from the mansion and never harmed the reporter around whom the
story revolves? The story line compels you to question the sequence of events
and also connects you in such a manner that your mind starts searching for
answers hidden in the intricacies of the story. I am eager to read part 2 of
the story.
The flow and presentation of the
story were interesting. Some editing is required but it did not seem to disturb any other element of this well structured story. The cover of the book is equally interesting, and to be
frank, quite scary as well. For complete five minutes I was staring at the book
cover trying to make out all the scary figures it had, the mansion, the witch,
the card and a scary skeleton on the card.
My favourite dialogue: “Chudail Chudail! Where are you?” It made me smile the first time I read.... the dialogues on the card in the later section of the story scares you a bit, but this one was completely adorable. ~smiles~
My Rating: 3.9/5
